Checking In w/ Hoonigan!

A while back I had the chance to sit down with a good friend and fellow contender to talk about his Pro-Am hopes, plans, and support. And now I’m writing an article about his newly licensed FDA Program, new build, pro hopes, and plans as we inch closer to the start of FDA 2014.

Let’s time travel, eh? Two weeks ago I found myself standing in the pits of the Sunset Speedway with our driver in question, DMA Hoonigan. We rolled his car off the trailer and started going over the checklist. Everything was a go and he rolled out to the burnout box, I proceeded to a media spot on track.

Almost instantly Hoonigan looked comfortable, as he made his way to the grid he didn’t hesitate to light em up for those in attendance.

hngngt3

When drivers started making their passes, you could see a pattern within the crop. Hometown guys throw it in hard. Hoonigan made sure to keep that pattern going with his first entry of the day.

hngngt1

To switch things up the organizers decided to reverse the track layout. I was able to move up into the turn to catch a shot of Hoonigan finishing out the track. This pony sounds like it was bred in hell. So raw.

HNGNArticle.

The lunch bell sounded and it was time to go stuff our faces. I headed to the pits to check on the car. Hoonigan was pretty ecstatic about his set up as he switched out his girls shoes. New rubber all around, a quick look over and she was ready. Drivers finished up their prep and started to make their way back out. Hoonigan rolled out, and I made my way to another spot I had been eyeballing.

hngngt5

From this spot I could get shots of drivers entering on the wall. Those that had done it before wasted no time backing that proverbial ass up.

hngngt2

The daylight was fading quickly, and I wanted to capture a specific shot. I moved closer to the corner and Hoonigan helped me make it happen on the first try.

hngngt4

As the day came to a close we loaded up and turned in. I’m excited to see what kind of a show Hoonigan will perform with this car. Thanks for a fun weekend! I can say one thing’s for certain… Florida, I will be back.

Behind the Helmet: Championship contention

HKS Slider

While heading to Sedona for Round 2 of MDU, i met up with TG xexzel, the current leader of Just Drift. After winning both two rounds, he is definitely in contention for the Championship.

Slider: What’s it feel like winning the first 2 rounds and qualifying first at the last round?

xexzel: Obviously it’s pretty ecstatic, winning 1 round on it’s owns a victory, but showing that I have what it take to keep winning, that’s another question in it’s self, wouldn’t of had the chance if I didn’t have my team behind me. “Team Deviance”
Slider: Leading the championship but a sizable lead, how are you taking in the expectations that are place on you?

xexzel: Expectations, well I’m not really sure there was any, but, Since there are, I’ll tell you, my expectations are keeping drifting fun, style is more important to me than, speed and gap, really shows what you impractically can do in drifting. Drifting is Drifting at the end of the day, I’m just here to enjoy it, with a little extra zazz!

Slider: What do you hope for the rest of the season?

xexzel: For the rest of the season, I hope for podium spots, this is just my goal and I’m willing to battle for it.
To prove I’m not just your average drifter. Plus there’s always room for improvement.

Slider: What’s your opinion on Le Mans?

xexzel: Le Mans, ah Difficult track, Takes a lot of speed, positioning and angle to really work this track well.
Haven’t really had a chance to really practice this track, this should be quite interesting, everyone in this tournament has there own style of drifting, hopefully we can expect some really unique battles, and meet some really nice people!

Slider: Tell us about you car and has there been any problems with it so far?.

xexzel: My 92′ Supra works really well around this track with 599bhp and about 588ft/torque, with my camber set to 1.3 on the back and about 0.8 on the front, 900 degree on the wheel and normal steering, this cars smooth and a really consistent power to weight ratio, this care makes it round with no problem, should be really interesting to see how I do.

Slider: Last question, who is the person that you think might be most challenging while battling them?

xexzel: Now that question is highly unknown, theirs people from multiple country’s with really amazing talent, with lag its really hard to tell.
But with what I’ve seen so far, MCON Maverick, really good drifter on his wheel, and not to mention my own team, DVN Rauzey or DVN Reddo.
All three of these pose a threat to me hitting the podium, but just cause the my team, doesn’t mean they let off by any means necessary.

I really think DVN Reddo has a nice chance of beating me, and despite not giving it to him, I’ll make him work for it, hopefully he can beat me.
And above all to anyone I missed out, Good luck to all.

Round 3 for Just Drift is shaping up to be ecstatic. Can xexzel make it three out of three. All we can do is watch.

Altitude doesn’t bother us: Just Drift Round 1

Chapter 1: Beginnings

Beginnings, their almost as hard as endings. After many hours of planning, there’s still going to be problems,
situations, and the path that you take isn’t necessarily the best. However, the one thing you do know is
that whatever path you do end up taking, it will be one hell of a journey. These were the thoughts of Drivers as they
rolled their cars off the trailers and onto the track for Just Drift Round 1.

The location for this round was stunning in every way. High up in the mountains above
Montserrat, Spain. As we got off the plane in Barcelona, Spain’s second most famous city, we
travel a couple of hours inland. As we did the views got even more spectacular but the closer we got the
silence we replaced with screaming engines that echo through the entire mountain range.

The Track was like something that me personally have never seen before. A quick right left right into two
long sweepers. There well no really changes in course height but this seemed like a tough track to put
some rookies on as we will find out later.

Many Drifting in this course heading more towards the angle side of things and failing to
achieve the speed zone.

Turn three was finding to be one of the hardest turns with some drivers pushed too hard and
overshooting the turn.

Turn 4 was also proving hard as drivers were struggling to fill the entire outside zone and in some cases,
pushed too hard whist doing it.

As soon as BostonTroy (Owner of FDA) let the first qualifier through the gate, i thought to myself,
this is going to be a fantastic year for Forza Drifting.

The surprise of qualifying was SLP Felon, who after getting in all the practice he could get as well as
putting done exceptional runs, only managed to get 13th, which put in right into battle DVN Rauzey.

It was just Rauzey who qualified high, the top 5 was a wash with DVN boys, taking 4 out of the
5 slots. The highest being nL Reddo with a 88 point score.

However, no one could beat MCON Maverick who put done a stellar first run, taking out first
position with a 90 point score.

Chapter 2: The fight Begins

The first contending battle was DVN Rauzey and SLP Felon. Felon knew the Rauzey was fast, so he
pushed himself.

Coming into the first sweeper, Felon came in hot and hit Rauzey, causing him to spin.

The second run had even more chaos then the first. On the same corner Felon spun again in front
of Rauzey, leaving him nowhere to go. Using his skill, Rauzey just made the gap in between
Felon and the edge of the track. Rauzey would take the win.

This put him right up against his own teammate that is DVN Sileighty.

The battle was tight, and short lived. Sileighty pushed hard on the chase but stalled entering the
first turn.

The all DVN battles continued when second place qualifier nL Reddo went up against
DVN Rubix. The battle was pretty much over before it start as on the 3 turn, Rubix pushed
too hard trying to close the gap and spun out.

he most amazing moment of the weekend didn’t take long when DVN Cookie went up against
xJustSaucy. On their second run, Saucy went too wide and hit the wall, spinning his car round
in dramatic fashion as Cookie went past him with flying colors.

DVN continued as nL Reddo and DVN Cookie met each other in the great 8. Cookie was
putting on a solid performance but Reddo wasn’t backing out, even to his own teammate.
In the end it wasn’t enough and Cookie would take the win.

Chapter 3: Podium in sight

The final four started with MCON Maverick and DVN Rauzey. The first run was hard fought
as Rauzey was giving Maverick no room.

Maverick seemed like a man on a mission answering right back to Rauzey and sending thing into a OMT

Sadly, that was where Maverick;s mission would end as Rauzey pulled a big enough gap to take the win.

DVN Cookie and TG xexzel would good head to head for the second final four battle with
Cookie hungry for the win.

Maybe a bit too hunger….. as in the second run he push too hard and drove off track giving
xexzel a free pass to the finals.

This would put Maverick and Cookie in the battle for 3rd place with Maverick pulling a sizable
on his lead.

The second run would show the end of Mavericks day as he drove off track on the first
sweeper. DVN Cookie getting third place.

The final battles would see another pair of DVN bros and it was granted that it was a all DVN
podium.

he battle was close in both runs with xexzel running a bit closer over the entirety of the
run, getting the round win and a early lead in the championship.

As the Just Drift Championship heads into round 2 these are the standings are:

TG xexzel                         116
DVN Rauzey                   106
DVN Cookie                     88
MCON Maverick            85
nL Reddo                            68

Bringing “So JDM” Back [Pro-Am Driver Feature]

Known well in the DL as a master painter, o JDM Only is taking on a new platform and entering in FDA’s Pro-Am series, Streetwise. I got the chance to fit in an interview with his busy schedule. As he competes to become a Pro, we chatted about his new car, his sponsors for the season, and what he would like to achieve while running along side his teammates.

First may I ask what competition history, if any, do you have so far?

Not that much if I have to say, I did SRC once, but that didn’t turn out that great in the past, but everyone got their moments. I’ve been long around the community though and have been more drifting ”Underground” if you have to say it like that.

Now tell us about your car and why your chose an S14?

I chose the S14 because I’m a big S-Chassis fan, Always been drifting the PS13 in the S-Chassis family and i just wanted to try a younger brother of the PS13 basically haha. Well i run my S14 with a 2.4 L SR20 (SR24DET Redtop) its pushing at this moment 460HP / 339 LB-FT and it doing the job pretty well. I hope I don’t get any major engine problems what so ever in SWD this season and just have a lot of fun and maybe make new friends around the Pro-AM.

Now onto that paint. A lot of us have seen you in that wrap for awhile and may I be the first to ask, what inspired you to run that Japanese Style Paint?

If I have to say, always been and still am a big fan of the Japanese culture and the overall drifting style there. My S14 has been built by MCR Factory, a shop that builds drift cars owned by Masashi Yokoi (Team Mind Control) that’s also why it looks so much like their cars on some point. Just representing my own team though, Team Free Spirit, but also the MCR shop.

Now out of all Pro-Am championships, why are you choosing Streetwise and what are you hoping to achieve in Pro-Am?

I chose SWD because of my teammates, who also signed up for it and also because of the time zone, which really suited my schedule. As for what I’m expecting to achieve, of course I’d like to end up in the Top 5 overall by the last round. Round 1 is set in Road Atlanta and I’m not a big fan of it but, I hope my car and I perform to the best that we can and just make it to the Top 16 or Great 8. The most important thing though, as always, is to have fun! Also, I love this quote by Maverick from MCON: ”Anyone has a chance at knocking the big players out of contention. I’m just going to give it my all, and charge hard towards my goal of becoming pro”. So yeah guys just look out for everyone!

Okay, last one. Tell us about your team and sponsors that you have for Pro-Am.

Well I run with the team, Team Free Spirit. A Japanese based drifting team. We are around since 2012 (former Team Orange). I personally been sponsored by these brands for a little while now: MCR Factory, DMAX, SuperMade, Nankang Tire, Fuzzy-Tune, Koyorad, MightColor and Hustler. It looks much for just a Pro-Am, but in Japan I’ve been running the car for a while now, like I said. I get the car shipped this weekend to the US of A for Round 1 of SWD soon.

Thank you for your time JDM. Steetwise is going to be tough for JDM as, out of all the Pro-Am series, it has the most competitors signed up. We at AlienLab wish JDM the best of luck as he takes on the StreetWise Drift series this season.
Interview by HKS Slider

Chasing Maverick [Pro-Am Driver Feature]

Today, I’ve had the privilege to sit down and talk with one of Just Drift’s  promising competitors: MCON Maverick. The conversation was mostly about his up and coming season and about the new platform he’s showcasing.

Driver Info

Gamertag: MCON Maverick.

Time Zone: PST.

Nationality: American.

Wheel/Controller: Wheel.

Team Affiliation: Mission Control.

Vehicle Info

Car #: 118.

Vehicle Make: Nissan.

Vehicle Model: Skyline R32.

Vehicle Model Year: 1993.

Performance Index: S674.

Vehicle Specifications

Engine Platform: VR38DETT.

Power (hp): 594hp.

Torque: 537lb-ft.

Displacement: 4.1L Stroker.

So tell us a bit about the new car you plan on running in Pro-Am this season.

“This upcoming Pro-Am season I’m showcasing a new car. In previous years of competition(VFD, Drift Allstars) I’ve stuck with a V8 powerplant, pushing a slightly heavier car. This year with the rulebook being the way it is, I’ve started fresh with a new build. I will be running a 1993 Nissan GT-R R32 with a stroked VR38DETT. It will be pushing just under 600hp with 537lb-ft. of torque. This will be my first competition V6 engine in any chassis thus far, and I’m really looking forward to that..”

How about the vinyl wrap you chose. What inspired the warlike theme and how about the aggressive bodykit?

“The new wrap I have pieced together was inspired by a Vietnam Era B-52D paint, and we will be running a variant on our team’s Pro car as well. We wanted something that seemed battle styled, so I looked up bombers and came up with this. The body work on my car is a throw together of kit pieces I like, with the focus point being my ginormous wing out back. As massive as it is, it does provide my car with the squat it needs to put the power down.”

I know you’re a part of Mission Control along with Panic240sx, but who else is on your team this year?

“I have partnered with Vans Footwear, ASD, Hoonigan, Takata, Maxxis, and Garrett this year, and look forward to their support. “

What kind of competitive history do you have and what Pro-Am series are you competing in this season?

“Along with a new car, I will be competing in a new series this year. My last stint in Pro-Am was VFD 2011, and I placed lower than I hoped. Being relatively new to Forza Competition it was a definite learning curve, and it humbled my outlook on competitive driving. I will be competing in Just Drift Pro-Am this year, but I feel it will go a little smoother than my first go at earning a pro license. I have matured as a driver, and have a better understanding of what to expect going into battles. Its a battlefield out here, and it really doesn’t matter how good you think you are… Anyone has a chance at knocking the big players out of contention. I’m just going to give it my all, and charge hard towards my goal of becoming pro.”

Just Drift is shaping up to become one the most competitive Pro-Am series with names like xJustSaucy, Bobstudley762, silent ninja 123, and SLP Felon just to name a few. Maverick is no exception and a force to be reckon with. Best of luck to Mav in his road to Pro.

Make Sure to watch out for Mav in the upcoming Just Drift Pro-Am series!

Day at Fujimi

Earlier in the day after getting off of work I witnessed a few cars speeding up northbound toward Mt. Fujimi. I had heard a few guys at work talking about a big race coming up and that they were going to go up to the mountain tonight to watch the racers practice. I figured that’s where the speeding cars were headed since they all seemed capable of running the downhill in a decent time.

Since I had no other plans tonight I decided I would tag along with my coworkers to see what all the talk was about. Upon arriving to the spectating area I noticed a few dozen cars, none of which impressed me too much. I had locked my eyes on one that had been running our corners the fastest all night. A sky blue RX-7 FC tearing up the mountain. I managed to snag a few pictures through my phone but they came out decent enough to put up here.

I’m definitely going to go back soon to see more of this car!

Meet Stop Motion Media

As we get ready to kick off the next season of drifting in Forza 4 we have a lot of preparation to do. A lot of planning goes into coverage blogs and it all boils down to who’s on your team in the war on time management. While there are a number of people willing to help with media coverage alongside of myself, I decided to ask the guys over at Stop Motion Media if they would like to be a partner of Alien Lab. After talking to the owner of Stop Motion, Little Wolflet, we managed to talk out a pretty good deal. Since they’re based on Made Not Manufactured, a website that allows Forza players to roleplay a money management aspect of the game, they will be covering a lot of segments that come from that website.

Meet Scott, or Little Wolflet as most of the Forza community knows him as, as we hear the origin of Stop Motion and a little about his personal MNM ride.

“In late 2013, I started a Photography Club to exploit the beauty of an under-rated art form.  It started as just me (Wolf) and quickly grew. It currently has 4 Photographers, Dorifutokuma (Taylor), XCB3X (Chris), Drags (Nick), and Myself (Scott). Stop Motion Media has shot for Chris’s Monthly Matsuri, and has hosted 3 Photo competitions and many more to come.

I drive a 1993 Nissan Skyline BNR32 as my personal car (although I own quite a few more Skylines) and love that car to death. I bought it a few months ago as an up-hill Touge car for a Touge team that I’m in called Yama no Kage (Mountain Shadows). I’ve named her “Petrichor” because, Petrichor roughly translates to “The blood of stone” which I felt was an accurate description.”

Scott was cool enough to send over some sample pictures of his BNR32 shown below.

“I’ve built this car up to the point that no one wanted to race it, so I eventually sold quite a few parts. Now, the Skyline sits at around 360 BHP to all 4 wheels and weighs around 2,600 lbs.”

So there you have it, Stop Motion Media is now a partner of Alien Lab. Expect to see some excellent media coverage from them featured right here on this site. If you want to check out more from Stop Motion Media visit their thread over on MNM linked below.

Forza Drift Allstars Staying in Forza 4

Yep! It’s old news to some but for those who haven’t heard yet BostonTroy released a video explaining DMA’s plans to stay on Forza 4 for the Forza Drift Allstars Series.

BostonTroy on Forza 4 FDA

Along with the news came a new forum specifically designed for FDA. The entire series has been remapped with 3 new Pro-Am series to compete in for the new guys along with the Pro series. Currently ideas are being tossed around about power caps and car restrictions within Pro-Am events. An ETA of the series, Boston stated in a post, should be late January to early February. Boston also touched on the idea of running a Pro-Am series early next year prior to the official Pro series in order to fill up the Pro entries a bit more and allow some new blood to get involved. This will also thin out the competition for the next series of Pro-Am when the novices who never competed in FDA before have gone through the Pro-Am haze already and moved on.

Overall, things are looking bright for Boston and all of the FDA staff with the upcoming drift season and we’re looking forward to covering the events alongside!

Introducing The Alien Lab

The Alien Lab has been a project I’ve been thinking about for a long time. Finally it seems like the best time to unload it with the height of Forza coming up during the holidays. I hope to bring you all the latest news in the Forza scene and the drift scene in real life as well. My outlook on this website is high so expansion is on the horizon. Whether you’re a good writer, photographer, editor, or just want to help out the site in anyway you see fit you’re more than welcome. C&C is greatly appreciated as well! I’m looking forward to a great year of drifting and Forza ahead.
